The Royal Canadian Mint announced the release of a new coin, made of pure silver, weighing one ounce; to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the author of the novel Anne of Green Gables, L. M. Montgomery.
The Mint's website published, “She published hundreds of short stories and poems in addition to 20 novels that achieved lasting fame by creating one of the world's most unforgettable characters: a brave and talkative orphan girl with red braids, a great imagination and feelings, and the same deep love for Prince Edward Island as her creator.”
It is worth noting that the literary icon is depicted in an image on the back of the 99.99% pure silver coin alongside the heroine Anne of Green Gables, the manuscript, rolling green hills, and the blue sky of Prince Edward Island's landscapes.
Montgomery's signature has also been recreated on the back of the coin, along with a small drawing of a cat, which she used to sign many of her books. Canadian artist Brenda Jones, who also designed the coin, incorporated the phrase “150 YEARS ANS,” in reference to the author's birth.
The cost of the coin reached $119.95 and can be ordered through the Mint's website, with production limited to 5,000 pieces.
