The police clarified that the girl who was fatally stabbed inside an apartment in Scarborough on Tuesday evening was only 12 years old.

The incident occurred inside a residential building near Dundalk Drive and Antrim Crescent at around 6:30 PM.

The police stated in a press release issued on Wednesday that the victim was found injured inside the residence and was pronounced dead at the scene.

They added that another young man was detained and charged with second-degree murder. Their ages have not been disclosed.

New details about the victim come as Prime Minister Doug Ford commented on the tragic incident. On Wednesday, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) and said he felt "deeply saddened" by the girl's death.

He added: "I can't imagine the pain of losing a child, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones."

At this stage, little is known about the incident itself, as the police previously stated that the other young man now facing charges was also located injured at the scene and was taken to the hospital.

He was later released from the hospital and is currently in custody.

Sergeant Brandon Price told reporters at the scene early Wednesday, "So I mean, at this stage of the investigation, as I mentioned, it’s still very early, but we believe it’s a separate incident and there’s no ongoing threat at this stage that we can determine. Certainly, anyone in the area who saw or heard anything unusual, it would be very helpful for us to hear from you. So I encourage you to reach out to Division 41 or the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit to let us know if you saw or heard anything out of the ordinary, and we will get in touch with you."

The police have not officially identified the victim at this time.
