The United Nations General Assembly will vote today, Friday, on a new draft resolution regarding the right of the State of Palestine to full membership and to enhance its status within the UN system, similar to other countries of the world.
The voting on the draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly, composed of 193 members, will serve as a global survey of the extent of support for Palestine and its request for full membership in the international organization.
The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) quoted the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for the United Nations and its specialized agencies, Omar Awadallah, as saying that Palestine meets the criteria for membership set out in Article 4 of the United Nations Charter.
Awadallah added that passing the resolution requires a two-thirds majority vote from the General Assembly members, and this vote will represent a declaration of Palestine's eligibility to be a fully-fledged state, which would enhance its legal status in the United Nations and its affiliated organizations and bodies.
Awadallah clarified that the adoption of the resolution will provide an additional boost to the status of the State of Palestine, granting it additional powers among various matters, including: attendance and participation in all international conferences under the United Nations, sitting among member states alphabetically, having the right to speak on any agenda item of the United Nations, and to speak on behalf of any international groups, as well as to present draft resolutions in its name.
He affirmed the historic, natural, and legal right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and full membership, noting that 144 countries recognize the State of Palestine, which is a member of more than 120 international agreements and organizations and fulfills all its duties and responsibilities in the institutions affiliated with the United Nations, having met all the obligations required for full membership.
Upon the voting and adoption of the resolution by the General Assembly, the Security Council will be called upon to reconsider the request for full membership and issue a positive recommendation that aligns with the consensus and international momentum established by the adoption of this resolution.
