It has been a devastating month for the Jargour family from Laval, Quebec, and it got worse on Friday.
The family's vacation in Cuba turned into an endless nightmare after the body of one of their loved ones did not return with the rest of the family.
Instead, someone else was sent in his place, and they are now searching for answers as well as for their father.
Faraj Jargour died on March 22 in Varadero, Cuba, and when they went to identify the body of the 68-year-old man and father of two, it was a Russian man about 20 years younger than him in the coffin with a tattoo and a full head of hair.
Faraj’s daughter, Miriam Jargour, said, “That was not my father's body. It was someone else that did not resemble my father.”
His son, Karam Jargour, said, “I am in shock; I cried.”
Faraj suffered a heart attack at sea on the second day of their family vacation. With no doctor at the hotel they were staying in, the family waited hours for emergency services to arrive and take his body.
They then contacted the Canadian consulate and were told it was closed for the weekend and that they could come in on Monday.
The consulate also said the family would have to pay $10,000 to repatriate Jargour’s remains to Canada.
They pooled their money together and waited three weeks. Now, they have his passport and death certificate but have no idea where his body is.
Karam said, “It’s a body. It’s a human being, not an animal or something like that.”
The family tried to reach out to the Canadian government several times, and when they finally got through to someone, Miriam said the official told her it was not their responsibility. She said the responsibility for delivering the body falls on the company Asistur, a Cuban medical insurance company.
However, Miriam said she had not been in contact with the company at all.
She added, “We Canadians are not protected in Cuba.”
Urgel Bourgie funeral home in Montreal told CTV News that they are in contact with the Cuban company and are searching for the correct body.
Global Affairs Canada told CTV News via email that they are looking into the file.
The entire ordeal has been an emotional and physical drain on the family.
Karam said, “It has been almost a month since my mother has eaten because of what happened.”
