The Arab League welcomed, today Sunday, the inclusion of the African Union in the G20, hoping to achieve the same status.
Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, stated in a statement that Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the announcement by G20 leaders to include the African Union as a member of the group during their meeting held on September 9 and 10 in New Delhi.
Rushdi also praised this decision, describing it as a positive step that would lead to mutual gains for both sides and contribute to enhancing the participation of African countries in the decisions and positions of the global economic poles.
He emphasized that this step will enhance the capacity of the African continent to contribute to solving pivotal global issues such as climate change, energy security, food security, and others.
Additionally, Rushdi expressed hope that the Arab League's request to obtain the same status would be approved, pointing to the recent actions taken by the Arab League in this regard.
He mentioned that the issues addressed by the group are directly relevant to the Arab region, especially concerning development, employment, facilitating trade exchange, and eradicating poverty.
Moreover, the G20 decided yesterday Saturday during the opening session of its summit in the Indian capital New Delhi to grant permanent membership to the African Union in an effort to make the group more representative.
