Noting that many newcomers cannot even get an interview for a position in their field of expertise due to the lack of Canadian experience, Doug Ford's government said it will ban this criterion from job offers in Ontario.
Ontario also said it is the first province in the country to adopt such a measure.
The goal, as explained by Labor Minister David Piccini, is to prevent immigrants from being limited to jobs for which they are more qualified due to their lack of Canadian experience.
Minister Piccini said it will also be necessary to educate employers to eliminate discriminatory practices.
He recognizes that simply banning the Canadian experience requirement in job offers does not prevent an employer from rejecting a newcomer because their CV shows they have never worked in Canada or that their foreign experience raises questions about equivalency.
He also added that often, newcomers do not even get the opportunity to interview, adding that many jobs have a probation period, allowing their skills to be assessed.
The minister must present his bill next Tuesday.
