Gunfire was fired at Jewish schools during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, as well as clashes between Concordia students, raising concerns for Prime Ministers Trudeau and Legault, who called for calm today Thursday, while urging the police to show firmness if necessary.

Both Trudeau and Legault described the two incidents as unacceptable, indicating increased tension in the streets of Montreal against the backdrop of the war between Hamas and Israel.

Also, in a reference to the presence of much fear in the country at this time, Prime Minister Trudeau specifically announced that hatred and violence have no place in Canada.

He added: "I understand that there are people who are deeply shocked by what is happening to the extent that they feel the need to share and fuel this hatred, but this is not who we are."

Trudeau also affirmed: "We are one of those countries that have developed a way of living together, the ability to learn from each other, and to stand by the pains and fears of our neighbors. It is an extraordinary wealth in this increasingly unstable world."

In response to a question about whether Quebec should follow France's example and ban some demonstrations in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas, the Prime Minister confirmed that nothing is ruled out at this time.

Earlier, Education Minister Bernard Drainville described the shooting at two Jewish schools in Montreal as a terrorist act, adding: "We do not shoot at schools in Quebec. Our hearts are with the Jewish community."

Drainville also added that he is concerned about the rise of anti-Semitism, as was the case with his colleague and Minister of Higher Education, Pascale Déry.
