Supporters distributed water and other supplies at the camp set up by student demonstrators in solidarity with Palestinians on the University of Toronto campus as the protest entered its second day.
The demonstrators worked this morning to secure their tents and a fence around an area of the campus known as Kings College Circle amid stormy weather.
The camp – one of many established on Canadian university campuses in recent days – was set up early Thursday morning after students said they breached the fence.
The university stated that the tents, banners, and flags posed a security concern and requested that students leave by 10 p.m. on Thursday.
However, as the deadline approached, the university continued to say it did not intend to remove the demonstrators if their activities remained peaceful.
Eirwen Mackay, one of the protest organizers, stated that the demonstrators joined students at other universities in Canada and the United States in setting up camps to urge their schools to disclose ties with the Israeli government and divest from Israeli companies.
She added, "We are all standing together in solidarity, demanding our university, which we all attend and are a part of, to stop participating in this genocide."
The International Court of Justice is investigating whether Israel has committed acts of genocide in the ongoing war in Gaza, and a ruling is expected to take years. Israel has denied the allegations of wrongdoing and accused the court of bias.
The Israeli campaign on Gaza began after gunmen led by Hamas breached southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of about 1,200 people, most of whom were civilians, and the taking of around 250 men, women, and children hostage. The Israeli attack has resulted in the deaths of more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials.
The war has caused massive destruction and brought about a humanitarian disaster, with thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza facing imminent famine, according to the United Nations.
Pro-Palestinian activists also set up tents at McGill University in Montreal, the University of Ottawa, and the campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
