Official data showed an increase in the number of migrants to record levels not seen in 10 years, from Canada to the United States, where thousands prefer to migrate south for several reasons.
The U.S. ACS agency, managed by the U.S. Census Bureau, revealed that the number of people who moved from Canada to the United States reached 126,340 in 2022.
This represents an increase of about 70% from 75,752 individuals who moved to Canada in 2012.
A total of 126,340 people migrated from Canada to the United States this year, including 53,311 individuals born in Canada, 42,595 Americans who left Canada to return to their home country, and 30,434 foreign-born migrants to Canada who decided to move to the United States instead.
The Canadian Statistics Agency stated that United Nations data it gathered and shared with CBC News indicates that the United States is the most preferred destination for Canadian migrants.
There were about 800,000 Canadians living in the United States as of 2020, which is eight times more than the 100,000 living in the United Kingdom, according to the latest UN figures.
Facebook groups have been formed to help Canadians make this move, which newcomers use to exchange advice on how to obtain a visa or green card, where to live, and what to do about health insurance.
One group called "Canadians Moving to Florida and the USA" has over 55,000 members and adds dozens of new members each week.
It is worth noting that real estate agents and immigration lawyers assisting Canadians in making this move indicate that the increase is partly driven by the desire for affordable living and a move away from high costs and difficulties in buying homes as well as exorbitant rents.
It is also noteworthy that some people say they have lost trust in Canada under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and prefer to pursue the American dream instead, according to agents and lawyers.
