The position of the Charmovers band received audience approval, especially since this incident came following two events that both topped the "trend" in recent days.
A controversy was stirred on social media platforms in Egypt a few hours ago, due to a post written by one of the girls complaining about the refusal of the organizers of the "Charmovers" band concert - scheduled to be held today, Friday, in the North Coast of Egypt - to allow her attendance wearing the traditional hijab, insisting that if she wants to book a ticket and attend, she must only wear a "turban" and not the commonly known hijab, confirming that this is a basic condition for entry.
Varied reactions
The girl had no choice but to refuse that unfair policy - from her point of view - and the rude manner in which she was treated, then decided to escalate the matter to be discussed on social media platforms in full view and hearing of everyone, threatening to report to the Tourism Police, which the concert organizers showed disregard for, before they canceled her reservation without hesitation and prevented her from coming.
This incident sparked varied reactions among the public; on one hand, some sympathized with the girl, confirming that there is a constant trend of attack and bullying against veiled women, and such incidents have even become common in Egypt, especially in summer. Others defended everyone's freedom to wear what aligns with their personal beliefs, whether those clothes agree with the hijab or contradict it, confirming that no group has the right to belittle another group for any reason.
On the other hand, an opposing current appeared, seeing that any place has the right to set its own "dress code" that suits it, and just as there are places that do not accept veiled women, there are other places that practice the same discrimination against non-veiled women. The evidence is the "dress girl," the university student in Tanta who was last month bullied by supervisors because she wore a dress during the exam.
Charmovers stand in solidarity with veiled women
As soon as the members of the "Charmovers" band learned about the details of the incident, they announced the immediate cancellation of the concert, as what happened goes against the principle of equality they uphold. This was officially announced by Ahmed Bahaa, founder of the "Charmovers" musical band, via social platforms, confirming their refusal to hold the concert unless the issue is resolved, stressing that there is no discrimination among the audience.
This stance was well received by the public, especially since this incident came after two events that both topped the "trend" in recent days. The first: a girl was prevented from entering a famous café in the New Cairo district because she wore an abaya. The second: the daughter of Dr. Heba Qotb - a family relations consultant - who posted a video expressing her anger after being barred from entering the swimming pool because she was wearing a "burkini," a long swimsuit usually worn by some veiled women.
As soon as the news of the possibility of "Charmovers" canceling the concert reached the organizers, they announced their retraction of the condition of not allowing veiled women to attend, although this did not prevent them from clarifying that their rules do not explicitly prohibit veiled women from entering, but it concerns the style of the hijab itself, allowing the hijab to be wrapped in the "turban" style, but not the regular way.
A busy summer with concerts
It is worth mentioning that the latest music video released by the "Charmovers" band was titled "Single," a song composed and written by Ahmed Bahaa, arranged by Mohamed Al-Arqan, and directed by Youssef Tayea in his first directorial experience. The band chose an innovative idea for the video, appearing as elderly men calling for "life without commitment."
Besides tonight's concert, the "Charmovers" band plans to hold another concert on July 15th at the "Hyde Park" theater in New Cairo, performing some of their most famous songs, including "Split," "Five Cents," "Dunia," "Planet," as well as "Gossip," "Not Important," "Enough, I'll Control," and other unconventional songs that the audience has long adored.
