Air raid sirens went off warning of air strikes in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Thursday.
The sound of sirens was heard in Kyiv and a warning was issued by the local government in the Ukrainian capital warning of air raids.
The Ukrainian government asked all residents of the capital to go down to shelters.
Russian forces had taken control of an airport located 25 km from the center of the Ukrainian capital.
Meanwhile, Russian forces took control of Antonov military airport which is 25 kilometers from the center of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, according to CNN correspondent on the ground Matthew Chance.
CNN correspondent confirmed that the forces controlling the airport carry an emblem with orange and black colors indicating that they are Russian forces.
The commander of the unit that took control of the airport confirmed that fierce battles broke out near the airport and that the Ukrainian army is planning to launch a counterattack in order to regain control of the military base.
He said, "We hear the sounds of planes in the air, there are columns of black smoke rising from the base."
