Ryerson University has officially chosen a new name. The institution will be called Toronto Metropolitan University.
On Tuesday, the Board of Governors unanimously voted on the new name in response to months-long research on the university's name and its role in Canada's residential school system.
President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi said, "This is a very important moment in our university’s history as we move forward with a name that better reflects our values and can take us into the future."
Speaking to CP24 on Tuesday evening, Lachemi added that the new name defines "the university’s aspirations to provide opportunities for collaboration" and "building connection and community."
The move towards this change sparked protests that intensified last summer and included the removal of the Egerton Ryerson statue on campus.
The renaming process involved a special committee responsible for reviewing responses from 30,000 members of the community and 2,600 potential options.
Ultimately, Toronto Metropolitan University was chosen to demonstrate the institution's strong desire to link its name to its location.
Jennifer Simpson, Chair of the University's Renaming Advisory Committee, said, "Through our community engagement, we learned that there is a strong desire—across all student groups, faculty members, staff, and alumni—for the new name to reflect our place or location.".
Before the official selection of a new name, the university said that all degrees, certificates, and diplomas bearing the school's previous name will remain valid.
The school told CTV News Toronto in November: "Changing the university's name does not affect the value of the education, experience, and credentials earned."
