The Canadian government is preparing to legislate rules requiring that all new vehicles sold in the country be emissions-free by 2035, according to Bloomberg agency on Sunday.
The agency said that the Canadian federal government will announce in the coming days a set of rules, called the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, aimed at gradually phasing out the sale of new combustion vehicles, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Toronto Star, quoting a senior unnamed government official.
The reports said that the new rules will require emissions-free vehicles – which include electric batteries, hydrogen, and electric vehicles – to constitute 20% of all new car sales in 2026, 60% in 2030, and 100% in 2035.
The reports stated, according to the agency, that the government also wants to ensure the availability of electric vehicles for consumers in Canada, amid concerns about supply shortages as electric cars, trucks, and SUVs are shipped to other markets.
