According to a new report, immigrants coming to Canada in recent years earn significantly more than those who moved to the country in the previous decade.
The Parliamentary Budget Officer's office issued today, Friday, its independent report on the income dynamics of new immigrants to Canada. The Budget and Budget Office provides independent economic and financial analysis to Parliament aimed at budget transparency and accountability.
The underlying reasons for income gains were unclear, but the Budget Office found trends in the data indicating the reason behind the increase in this average. One example is that some of these income gains occurred during a period when new arrivals had pre-existing social networks in Canada, such as through relatives already in the country.
Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux said in a press release today: "Labour market outcomes for new immigrants to Canada have significantly improved during the first decade of the 21st century," "The median total income rate for all taxpayers reaches 78 percent, reflecting some of the relative losses suffered by new immigrants during the eighties and thereafter."
The federal government has decided to increase the number of permanent residents that Canada welcomes each year to 500,000 by 2025.
