Clashes renewed today, Monday, in Sweden's third largest city between police officers and angry Muslims over a new burning of a copy of the Holy Quran.
The clashes erupted in a neighborhood for immigrants in the city of Malmö, southern Sweden, according to the Associated Press, where early on Monday, an angry crowd, mostly made up of youth, set tires and debris on fire. Some were also seen throwing electric and motorized bicycles and breaking through barriers in the Rosengård neighborhood, which has witnessed similar clashes in the past.
For its part, the police stated that they were pelted with stones, while protesters set fire to dozens of vehicles last night, including an underground garage. The police added that they arrested at least 3 on Monday, while they reported they had arrested 15 on Sunday.
Several signs denouncing the burning of the Quran were also raised during the protests.
Additionally, senior police officer Petra Stenkula said: "I understand that a public gathering like this stirs strong emotions, but we cannot tolerate disturbances and violent expressions like those we saw on Sunday afternoon." Stenkula added: "It is extremely unfortunate to see acts of violence and vandalism in Rosengård once again."
