Quebec Governor François Legault issued an official letter addressed to Justin Trudeau requesting a reduction in the number of asylum seekers to his province. In his letter, Legault stated, “We are on the verge of collapse due to the excessive reception of an exaggerated number of asylum seekers arriving in Quebec, month after month, until it has become catastrophic.”
He pointed out that Quebec had received a large number of asylum seekers compared to other provinces.
Legault also mentioned that 60,000 new asylum seekers were registered in Quebec during 2023, which placed great pressure on all services in the province.
The letter also included that asylum seekers face great difficulty finding housing, which exacerbates the housing crisis; resulting in shelters being overcrowded with homeless people.
He added that organizations providing assistance to asylum seekers can no longer accommodate the numbers of asylum seekers, and that refugee children represent a significant strain on schools suffering from a shortage of teachers and available spaces.
Justin Trudeau mentioned that asylum seekers awaiting work permits receive financial assistance from Quebec, and that in October alone, 43,200 asylum seekers received assistance worth 33 million dollars.
