The Quebec Teachers' Union, which has been on an indefinite strike, announced Wednesday night that it has reached a preliminary agreement with the government regarding salaries and working conditions.
The preliminary agreement will be presented today, Thursday, to the Independent Teachers' Federation Council (FAE), which must decide if it is an agreement in principle before putting it to a vote by union members.
If approved, the agreement will end the indefinite strike, which has kept 368,000 students at home since November 23 after about 800 schools were forced to close.
Melanie Hupart, chair of the FAE, said in a press statement: "The 66,500 FAE members have just spent 22 days on the streets, unpaid, to make their voices heard." "We will respect our democratic processes before further expressing ourselves."
Teachers represented by the Common Front – a coalition of public sector unions – will vote on a preliminary agreement regarding working conditions, but have not yet reached an agreement on salaries, and they threaten an indefinite strike in the new year.
