Protesters in Peru objected to the signing of a contract with a private company to sell entrance tickets to the ruined city of "Machu Picchu," by preventing access to the city.

Among other things, the protesters closed the railway line leading to the archaeological site in the Andes Mountains.

The Ministry of Culture in Peru announced that it will terminate the contract and called on the residents to end their strike.

The protest caused the disruption of movement for more than a thousand tourists in the city of "Machu Picchu" over the weekend.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed tourists of the difficulties in arriving and departing currently due to the blockade.

The head of the local Chamber of Commerce told the newspaper "El Comercio" that the area loses about 3 million Peruvian soles (786,282 US dollars) in revenue daily because of the protests.

The ruins of "Machu Picchu" are considered one of the most important tourist attractions in South America, and have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

The city was built by the Incas in the fifteenth century and consists of about 200 buildings.
