The Canadian House of Commons concluded its fall session on Tuesday amid a state of political instability facing the minority government led by Justin Trudeau. This conclusion came after party losses in by-elections and rising tensions within the Liberal party.

The resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Monday sparked widespread controversy, as she criticized Trudeau's policies in an open letter, accusing him of ignoring her advice on “costly political projects.” These developments have led many party members, in addition to opposition party leaders, to call for Trudeau's resignation or demand early elections.

The leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, renewed his call for what he termed “carbon tax elections,” while the leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, called for the launch of an election campaign before the end of January. For his part, the leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh, stated that Trudeau should resign but has not withdrawn his parliamentary support for the government so far.

As divisions within the Liberal party increase, reports indicate that around 40 to 50 Liberal MPs are calling for Trudeau's resignation. In light of the party's consecutive losses in by-elections, Trudeau's leadership faces growing doubts about its ability to continue.

Trudeau announced that he would take a period of reflection during the holiday season, while speculation is rising about a possible cabinet reshuffle and the likelihood of early elections or a leadership race for the Liberal party.
