Recent opinion polls indicate that the leader of the right-wing Conservative Party in Canada, Pierre Poilievre, could become the country's next Prime Minister, after the significant progress he is making in the polls at the expense of the Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau.
Opinion polls also suggest that Poilievre and his conservatives may form a majority government, which could change Canada in major ways, aligning it with the prevailing right-wing approach currently seen in the West. However, little is known about Poilievre's plans other than repealing the federal carbon tax, but the immigration file may top his priorities as is the case with all conservative governments.
In the 2021 federal election, the Liberals won a minority government with 160 seats, while the Conservatives formed the opposition with 119 seats.
The Bloc Québécois won 32 seats, while the New Democratic Party won 25 seats, and the Green Party won two seats.
The Liberal Party headed by Trudeau continues to govern thanks to the support of the New Democratic Party, which could collapse at any time if a disagreement arises between the two sides over any bill the Democratic Party refuses to support.
