Toronto police have arrested two men and charged them in connection with a pro-Palestinian demonstration inside a shopping mall in downtown Toronto last month.

On December 17, an estimated 150 people participated in a demonstration in front of the Toronto Eaton Centre Zara location. A week earlier, Zara, a multinational retail clothing company, had withdrawn an advertising campaign that some said resembled images of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Toronto police investigators allege that during the demonstration, the two men blocked the store entrance and prevented employees from closing.

A statement released by the police on Sunday said: "The two men began pushing security and were trying to enter the store."

The police claimed that one of the men pushed an officer who tried to remove him from the operation and that the other struck an officer with an umbrella.

A video from the day later circulated online showing a crowd chanting in front of the store. In the video, one of the protesters can be heard saying "I will put you on the ground" and threatening to put someone "six feet under."

On Saturday, officers from the Toronto Police Hate Crimes Unit executed a search warrant related to the incident. Police say "items of evidentiary value" were seized during the raid. The release did not specify the items.

As a result, Toronto police arrested Amr Abu Fareek, 19, and Malik Abu Fareek, 34.

Amr was also charged with unlawful assembly, one count of participating in an unlawful assembly while masked, one count of mischief, one count of assaulting a peace officer, and one count of uttering threats.

While Malik was charged with unlawful assembly, mischief, and assaulting a peace officer.

The accused appeared for the first time in court at bail hearings in Toronto on Sunday.

Toronto police said in their statement that they "respect people’s right to protest lawfully, but anyone who crosses the line from lawful protest to criminality can be arrested."

"Simply because a person is not charged at that time does not mean they cannot be charged later. Officers will continue to investigate, gather evidence, and determine whether charges are appropriate."

The police are asking anyone with information related to the investigation to contact 416-808-3500.
