Heavy rains and floods caused severe damage to homes, roads, and the infrastructure of schools, health centers, and sewage systems in the northern Piura and Tumbes regions, prompting the Peruvian government to declare a state of emergency, according to the Argentine newspaper Infobae.

The Peruvian government maintains the declaration of a state of emergency in 100 areas across 17 provinces throughout the country due to the heavy rains that have fallen since last week, causing river flooding, landslides, and floods.

The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) in that country issued a warning indicating that 444 areas are at risk of landslides or other movements, according to the risk scenarios prepared by the National Center for Disaster Estimation, Prevention, and Risk Reduction (Cenepred).

Today, Tuesday, the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru reported that many areas of the country, especially in the north and the Amazon, were affected last week by rains, which increased due to the impact of the El Niño climatic phenomenon.

According to reports from authorities, the Amazonian city of Inambari, located in the Madre de Dios region and bordering Brazil, was completely submerged.

The municipality of Brasiléia in the state of Acre, Brazil, recorded more than 800 people evacuated, with waters flooding hundreds of homes and businesses.

Last month, Peru experienced a significant rise in temperatures, with at least three people dying from sunstroke, as the country suffered a severe heatwave. The National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention, and Control issued a strict warning to follow monitoring, prevention, and control measures that must be adopted.

The Peruvian newspaper La República indicated that temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius at the beginning of summer, which is happening for the first time during this period.
