The federal government said it is forced to stop the "Canada Greener Homes Grant" program due to high demand.
The program offers compensation of up to $5,000 to homeowners who improve the insulation of their homes, including installing new windows with better heat insulation or installing a heat pump.
The government launched this energy-saving home renovation program in 2021 with a budget of $2.6 billion, and it was planned to run until 2027.
However, the funds allocated for the program are about to run out, the government explained.
"The great popularity of the program and the rate of grants awarded to homeowners have exceeded all initial expectations," said the Ministry of Natural Resources in the federal government, which oversees the program, in a message to Radio Canada via email.
The ministry did not announce a deadline for registration for the program, nor did it want to confirm or deny to Radio Canada whether homeowners have until March 2024 to conduct their first energy assessment of their homes, as some stakeholders in this industry confirm.
The ministry only said it will provide "regular updates on the progress of the program to homeowners, partners, and industry stakeholders."
But it confirmed that Canadians who have applied under the program will remain eligible to receive the assistance included in it.
The ministry added that more than 120,000 homeowners have received funds so far under the "Canada Greener Homes Grant" program.
The government reminded that in addition to the "Canada Greener Homes Grant," Canadians can benefit from the "Switch from Oil Heating to Heat Pump Program" and the "Canada Greener Homes Loan Program."
