Ottawa police are investigating after a man arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound following reports of a shooting at a cemetery during the funeral of another shooting victim several days ago.
Multiple 911 calls brought police to Ottawa Islamic Cemetery on South Manotick Road around 2:45 p.m. Friday.
The police said in a statement on Friday evening, "At the time of the shooting, there was the funeral of another victim who was killed on Tuesday of this week."
Police sources told CBC that a funeral was held on Friday for the late Abdel Hamid Haj Rajab, 24, who died earlier this week in a fatal shooting in a residential neighborhood in south Ottawa.
Police say the daytime shooting is a "brazen" act that leaves the victim's family "devastated."
Chon Limyo appeared in court on Friday in connection with this incident.
He was charged with second-degree murder and remanded in custody.
Police said that shortly after their officers arrived at the cemetery on Friday, a man with a "non-life-threatening" gunshot wound was transported to the hospital.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Ottawa Paramedic Service said they sent several vehicles to the shooting site, but police turned them back before they reached the scene.
Police cars were closing the cemetery entrance after 4 p.m., and officers turned away vehicles trying to enter the area.
Yasser Affaneh and his wife Iman said they stop at the cemetery every Friday to pray and leave flowers on their son's grave, who died in a skydiving accident a year ago.
Yasser Affaneh and his wife Iman said they visit Ottawa Islamic Cemetery every week to bring flowers and pray at their son's grave.
On July 8th, they found the gate closed by police.
Yasser Affaneh said, "It now appears that the cemetery is a crime investigation area," adding that the couple found it somewhat shocking.
He said about their regular visits, "This frees us from our grief and pressure, today it seems we will not do that."
