British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation from her position on Thursday, saying that early elections will be held about 6 weeks after she took office.

Truss became the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history, having taken office on September 6 only 44 days ago, amid economic crises and political disputes in Britain.

In a speech in front of the Prime Minister's office, Truss said: "Given the situation, I acknowledge that I cannot fulfill the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. So I spoke with His Majesty the King to inform him that I will resign from the leadership of the Conservative Party."

She added: "This morning, I met with the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Mr. Graham Brady, and we agreed that there will be a leadership election which will take place within the next week. This will ensure that we stay on track to fulfill our financial plans and maintain our country's economic stability and national security. I will remain Prime Minister until a successor is chosen."
