Judge sentenced Canadian musician Jacob Hoggard to five years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman from Ottawa.

The sexual assault occurred in 2016 in one of the rooms of a Toronto hotel. The victim stated: "What happened will haunt me for the rest of my life" during the sentencing hearing for Hoggard.

Hoggard was also charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm in a case involving a teenage fan, as well as sexual interference involving the complainant. However, he was found not guilty of these crimes. The defense lawyer for the 38-year-old Hoggard pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

The Crown sought a prison sentence of six to seven years - higher than the usual rate for sexual assault by someone with no criminal record.

The prosecution argued that Hoggard posed a danger to the public. Meanwhile, the defense said Hoggard should remain behind bars for three to four years.

They cited a psychiatrist’s report stating he is low risk for reoffending and has a good chance of rehabilitation.

The jury deliberated for six days and twice found themselves deadlocked on "some charges" before finding Hoggard guilty in June of sexual assault causing bodily harm in the case of an Ottawa woman.

The woman, who was in her early twenties at the time, said Hoggard betrayed her so badly she thought she would die. She testified that the sexual assault lasted for hours.

While Hoggard insisted at trial that he had consensual sex "with the complainants." He denied choking the Ottawa woman. At the sentencing hearing earlier this month, the Ottawa woman told the court that the incident left her paralyzed with fear and despair for several months.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed due to the usual publication ban, said the sexual assault took away her confidence, dreams, and changed her life. She said, "I was not the same after that day." "A part of me died that day and I will never go back to it."      Edited by: Yusra Bamitraf
