A new clinic has opened in Port Credit on the southern edge of Mississauga, and residents can access healthcare.
Rexall, a Canadian pharmacy chain with about 400 locations across the country, will open its first pharmacist care clinic in Port Credit next week.
A grand opening is planned for July 12 at the clinic, located at 175 Lakeshore Rd. W.
The opening is part of Rexall's plan to expand healthcare services for those in need of such access, company officials said in an email announcing the new location.
They added that with increasing pressure on the healthcare system to provide sufficient access to everyone, there is an urgent need for more walk-in locations.
A spokesperson for Rexall said in the email: “With an estimated 6.5 million people in Canada not receiving primary care,
it is confirmed that this development in pharmacy care better supports the needs of Ontario residents and the broader healthcare system.”
It was noted that the need is particularly high in rural communities and suburban areas like Port Credit “where care options are not accessible.”
According to Rexall, the new specialized clinic will “provide personalized care to the community, offer immediate pharmacist treatment for minor ailments, along with services such as chronic disease management, vaccinations and injections, men's and women's health, point-of-care testing, travel vaccines and more.”
Upon the opening of the new medical facility, company officials also noted “the evolving role of the pharmacist and how this healthcare provider can help bridge the gap in accessing Canadian healthcare in today’s strained system.”
As Ontario's healthcare system continues to face increasing pressure, as is the case across Canada, more clinics continue to open in Mississauga and beyond the city limits.
Last April, a new pharmacy health clinic opened inside a Metro grocery store at 910 Southdown Rd, in the Clarkson community of the city.
Recent data from the Ontario College of Family Physicians found that over 223,000 people in Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon do not have a family doctor, and this number could reach 430,000 by 2026.
