The Minister of Education in Ontario announced a new process for school construction that would cut timelines in half.
Stephen Lecce said the average time to build a school ranges between four and seven years, which is far too long to meet the needs of Ontario's rapidly growing population.
He says the new strategy involves standardizing designs for new schools to shorten planning time and reduce approval timelines.
Lecce explained that the province will prioritize "shovel-ready" projects that have realistic costs and timelines.
Ontario has allocated about $15 billion over 10 years to build new schools, and Lecce says the last time the process was "meaningfully fixed" was more than a decade ago.
