The federal government announced new funding of up to $143 million for Toronto, in support of asylum seekers flowing into Toronto.

The Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP) provides part of the amount of $362 million, which will be distributed evenly across Canada, as announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller.

The federal government had promised to provide about $97 million to fund housing for asylum seekers; in response to ongoing demands from various cities, including Toronto, to provide the necessary funding.

Shelley Carroll, the city's budget officer, previously stated that the city needs funding of up to $250 million from the federal government to cover housing for asylum seekers in Toronto.

It is worth mentioning that Toronto had announced that residents would have to pay an additional 6% tax on their bills during this current year 2024 if the federal government does not respond and provide funding for refugee housing.

Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto, added that the funding provided by the federal government is a first installment of the total funding, and that the federal government is committed to supplying us with more funding during the current year 2024.
