A official said that the Peace Bridge and Rainbow Bridge, which connect Canada and the United States, are closed after an explosion on the American side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Ron Renas, general manager of the Peace Bridge, told CBC Hamilton that the bridges were closed Wednesday afternoon.

Also on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the FBI Buffalo account said: The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a car explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the United States and Canada in Niagara Falls.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on X that she had been briefed on the incident that occurred on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and they are closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are also on site and ready to assist.

Also, Kerry Schmidt, a sergeant with the Ontario Police, said: "We have major issues now at the U.S. border in the Niagara area. Currently, the Rainbow Bridge is closed in both directions in Niagara Falls. The Niagara Regional Police, Niagara Parks Police, and Canadian border services are working on the incident in that area."

Schmidt added that the Fort Erie Peace Bridge is also closed in both directions and that the OPP is in the process of closing Highway 405 and the Queenston/Lewiston Bridge. He said he expects major delays in the Niagara area and encouraged people in the area to delay travel.
