Ottawa - The head of the NATO military alliance said he welcomes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's confirmation that Canada will consider increasing its military spending following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
For his part, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said at a Canadian defense conference today that Canada contributes to NATO in various ways.
This includes leading a multinational battle group in Latvia, and after Russia's attack on Ukraine, assigning two warships, aircraft, and additional forces to the alliance's defense efforts in Eastern Europe.
But Stoltenberg added that he would like to see all NATO allies do more, and he was excited that Trudeau opened the door earlier this week to add more funds to Canada's defense spending.
While all NATO allies agreed in 2014 to spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense over the next decade, Canada lagged behind most of its allies by spending much less.
Canada spent about 1.39 percent of its GDP on the military last year, according to NATO.
