Footage and images released by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have shown that the Russian spacecraft "Luna-25," which failed to land on the Moon's South Pole, left a crater measuring 10 meters in diameter when it crashed last month due to a technical problem.

Luna-25, the first Russian mission to the Moon in 47 years, failed to land on August 19 when it lost control and crashed on the lunar surface, highlighting the decline in Russia's space sector since the collapse of the Soviet Union, which had one of the most powerful space programs in the world.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) from NASA captured images of a new crater on the Moon's surface and concluded that it is likely at the crash site of "Luna-25."

NASA stated: "The new crater is about 10 meters in diameter. Because the new crater is near the estimated impact point of the Luna-25 spacecraft, the LRO team concluded that it was likely caused by that mission and not by a natural cause."

Following the crash, Moscow announced that a special ministerial committee had been formed to investigate the reasons behind what occurred.

Although many missions to the Moon do not end successfully, the failure of this mission highlights the decline of Russia's space capabilities since its days of glory during the Cold War competition when Moscow became the first to launch a satellite orbiting the Earth, Sputnik 1, in 1957, and when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space in 1961.
