A recent experiment revealed that 40% of people during their resuscitation were able to survive for a full hour with a stopped heart, and some survivors even confirmed that they could hear what was happening around them.
The British Daily Mail reported that a team from New York University monitored 667 individuals during resuscitation after their hearts had stopped for full hour periods.
The team found through imaging that 40% of the subjects had functioning brains during cardiac arrest, which means they were able to hear, see, think, and dream, while 30% of those who remained alive after cardiac arrest died, and 10% survived after an hour of heart failure.
28 survivors recounted various stories from that hour; some heard what was happening around them, while others saw strange dreams. One survivor was able to recall the words he heard during his heart's stoppage and repeated them in the same order, indicating the brain's quality of function during that critical hour.
