Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 600,000 vehicles in Canada and millions more in the United States due to a problem with the anti-lock braking system that could lead to a fire.
Documents released by U.S. safety regulators on Wednesday indicate that the anti-lock brake control unit can leak fluids and cause an electrical short. This can lead to a fire while the vehicles are parked or being driven.
Hyundai says that 326,942 vehicles in Canada are affected, including:

An additional 1,642,551 of these makes and models are being recalled in the United States.
The company says it is aware of 21 fire-related incidents in the United States, as well as 22 "thermal incidents," including visible smoke, burning, and melting, but Hyundai Canada told CBC News in a statement that "no incidents" or injuries or deaths have been attributed to this issue."
Kia Canada says that 276,225 vehicles in Canada have been affected, including:

Another 1.7 million Kia vehicles in the United States are included in the recall.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in a statement, said that "until these recalled vehicles are repaired, the safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other buildings."
It stated, "Fires can occur whether the vehicle is parked and turned off or while driving."
Dealers will replace the anti-lock brake fuse at no cost to owners, but owners will not be notified by mail until November.
