The visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Greece has gained significant importance compared to the number of issues on the table, in an effort to strengthen the network of relations with the southern front and aim to find tangible solutions to historical problems such as immigration and energy.
Meloni traveled to Athens as a guest to meet Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Cooperation in the field of energy is actually linked to gas, the port of Alexandroupolis, and infrastructure connections like the submarine cable linking Crotone with Preveza, aiming to improve international connectivity for Greece and establish the country as a regional hub for communications.
The two sides agreed to hold a high cooperation council between Greece and Italy in Italy in the first half of 2024, along with expanding the strong Greek-Italian relations.
Rome is also the main partner for the Aegean Sea thanks to the work of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Athens, which was established in 1952, and the presence of renowned Italian companies in Greek lands such as the Italian railway network "Ferrovie dello Stato," Snam, Italgas, and Finmeccanica.
Regarding the immigration issue, the two leaders agreed that only an integrated European immigration policy could represent a beneficial response to a historical challenge concerning strict border control and combating trafficking networks, according to the Italian website “Decode 39.”
There was also discussion about the need for new European financial rules to exclude defense costs from the calculation of member states' deficits, while Italy and Greece could do more in this regard.
In addition to issues related to emergencies such as migrants, energy, and the war in Ukraine, it is essential to discuss the file related to the European elections and the formation of the new European Commission.
This issue was not officially addressed in Athens, but it is known that Greece is one of the most decisive countries within the new mechanisms of the European People's Party.
The discussions aim for a potential alliance between the European People's Party and the European Conservatives, which has been under discussion for some time, but it is essential to consider the possibility of tracking these dynamics to evaluate the results of the European elections.
European People's Party leader Manfred Weber emphasized that the European Union must reconsider its approach to the southern front, following a two-day visit to Tunisia, a step that Meloni and Mitsotakis have referred to several times.
Meloni has personally focused on promoting a unified and genuine European strategy regarding Tunisia, as evidenced by her organized visits to the country.
