Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced a new humanitarian direction for Sudanese citizens and others who were residing in Sudan as of April 15, 2023, since the war began in Sudan; allowing them to join their families in permanent residence in Canada.
The Canadian government had stipulated that the application must be submitted by the son, father, grandson, or brother of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who resides permanently in Canada, and it is also required that the family member in Canada agrees to provide support and assistance
for a new life in Canada.
This program aligns with the temporary immigration procedures made available by the Canadian government for Sudanese temporarily residing in Canada, who currently find it difficult to return to their country under the current circumstances in Sudan.
The Minister of Immigration approved this matter; stating that the conflicts in Sudan still cause concern and the humanitarian situation is deteriorating.
Lawyer Walaa Osman added that the renewal made to the program allows sponsorship for family members, not just first-degree relatives, and it was not previously available for siblings, as it was limited to children and spouses.
She also pointed out that some are concerned as not all conditions are met, especially regarding being present in Sudan on April 15, 2023, at the outbreak of the Sudanese war; where some Sudanese were outside the country on that date and do not have residence in any other country, in addition to the financial obligations that may cause some crises.
