North Korea conducted a simulation exercise for a tactical nuclear attack -early yesterday, Saturday- which included the launch of two long-range "cruise" missiles carrying dummy nuclear warheads, in response to the joint exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that the drills were held "to warn enemies of the danger of an actual nuclear war." Pyongyang also reiterated its commitment to strengthening military deterrence against Washington and Seoul.

The Korean Central News Agency statement noted that "the nuclear power of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will enhance its responsible combat posture by all means to deter war and maintain peace and stability."

Additionally, North Korea claimed that the "nuclear strike mission was successfully carried out," as the missiles flew a distance of 1,500 kilometers, exploding at a predetermined altitude of 150 meters above the target.

This maneuver is the latest in a series of missile tests and military exercises conducted by North Korea in recent weeks, including a failed attempt to launch a spy satellite at the end of last month, which drew renewed criticism from the major political parties in South Korea.

The annual joint summer exercises between South Korea and the United States, known as "Ulchi Freedom Shield," concluded last Thursday after 11 days and included aerial exercises with B-1B bombers, which Pyongyang condemned as a "rehearsal" for invading its territory.
