The mayors of Montreal and Quebec, Valérie Plante and Bruno Marchand, responded to Pierre Poilievre, who described them as "incompetent mayors" in a post on the social network X. He wanted to attack them regarding the issue of housing construction.
"For a man who wants to be head of state, acting this way is exactly the opposite. This is not common sense at all. When you want to become Prime Minister, the sensible thing is to respect people," insisted Bruno Marchand at a press conference, referring to the Conservative Party slogan.
The leader of the Conservative Party wrote that while there was a significant decline in construction in Quebec, there were incompetent mayors, namely Marchand and Plante, who closed construction sites.
He promised that under his government, federal funds allocated to cities will be linked to the number of houses and apartments built.
However, he did not mention the Quebec government, which acts as an intermediary for federal investments in housing.
"It is not true that the federal government invests in Quebec municipalities, because there is an agreement between the governments of Quebec and Canada stipulating that investment is first done through the provincial government," affirmed the mayor of Quebec.
He added that he does not block any construction site, confirming that the city is in the process of accelerating. It is easy to say things like this incorrectly, protested Bruno Marchand.
Not the first...
Pierre Poilievre had already attacked the mayors of Quebec by referring to their incompetence. In September, when asked about cost overruns for the Quebec tram project, he said that if he were Prime Minister, he would have submitted projects with fixed budgets and would not add billions of dollars to projects poorly managed by incompetent politicians.
"These are purely political calculations, it is a way of practicing politics based on individual support calculations, by telling oneself if I go there, I will get 30% which will allow me to win," said Bruno Marchand, who denounces the Conservative leader's politics.
