Chris Tanev is set to play in his hometown, as the veteran defenseman and the Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to a six-year deal worth $27 million on Monday, about 90 minutes before the start of free agency in the National Hockey League.
The 34-year-old player, whose contract is valued at $4.5 million per season, recorded two goals and 19 points in 75 games in the 2023-2024 season with the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars, but his value comes at the other end of the ice, in the shutdown role.
Tanev's rights were acquired by the Leafs from the Stars on Saturday for a minor league forward with an expired contract and a seventh-round pick in 2026.
The unrefined Toronto native has 33 goals and 190 points in 792 regular-season games with the Vancouver Canucks, Flames, and Stars. He added 13 points (one goal, 12 assists) in 60 playoff games.
The Leafs also worked on their goalie situation, as they extended the contract of goalie Joseph Woll for three years at $10.98 million beginning in 2025-26.
Woll, who has dealt with a series of injuries throughout his career, went 12-11-1 last season with a save percentage of 0.907 and a goals-against average of 2.94.
He was outstanding in winning Game 5 and Game 6 of the first-round playoff series in Toronto after the Leafs trailed the Boston Bruins to force Game 7 this spring.
But the 26-year-old injured his back in the final seconds of Game 6 and had to miss the playoff game. Ilya Samsonov started the final game, which Toronto lost 2-1 in overtime.
Woll, who was selected 62nd overall in the 2016 draft, has a record of 21-13-1 with one shutout, a save percentage of 0.912, and a 2.76 GAA in 36 regular-season games.
He also went 3-2 in the playoffs in seven games, with a save percentage of 0.933 and a 1.78 GAA.
The Leafs also made a move on Sunday, re-signing winger Max Domi to a four-year extension worth $15 million.
