Latest statements of the Canadian Minister of Health regarding the start date for implementing euthanasia

Federal Health Minister Mark Holland stated that we need to give ourselves some time to have many discussions; so that we can announce about expanding the euthanasia policy to include patients with mental illness.

Holland called on the Canadian Parliament to work on delaying the government's plan to expand the scope of euthanasia for people suffering from mental illness.

He also pointed out that according to current legislation, people who suffer psychologically and mentally will be eligible to receive medical assistance in dying, starting from mid-March 2024.

The federal Canadian government had announced a delay in what it had previously declared about its plan to expand the eligibility for euthanasia; including those with mental illness until 2027.

Health Minister Mark Holland referred in this regard to his presentation of legislation to delay this decision until after the next federal elections in 2025.

Holland and Justice Minister “Arif Virani” also stated their agreement regarding the conclusion reached by a parliamentary committee indicating that Canada is not currently ready for this.

The provinces and territories also called on the federal government to stop expanding in this regard indefinitely.

The Conservative Party also demanded the federal government to completely cancel the expansion.
