A new variant, EG.5, of the "COVID-19" virus is spreading rapidly in many countries, the latest being Egypt, alongside scientists' efforts to understand the extent of its spread and the ability of our immunity to confront it. But what do we know about its symptoms and who are the most at-risk groups?
The new variant has witnessed more than 30 mutations in the amino acid of its spike protein compared to its closest predecessor: the subvariant BA.2 of "Omicron".
EG.5 is considered a descendant of XBB, and it is currently the dominant variant in the United States, accounting for about 20% of all recently reported "COVID-19" cases in the country.
Clinically, this variant does not seem to cause symptoms that are different or more severe than those of the viruses that preceded it. The most common symptoms include:
Scientists are still looking for other potential symptoms.
However, it is important to note that the extent to which an average person is affected by infection with the new virus may vary depending on the number of previous infections with one or more variants, as well as vaccination status.
The targeted groups are the elderly and patients with underlying medical conditions such as chronic lung, kidney, and heart problems. These individuals should ensure they are updated on the latest information regarding booster doses and take necessary precautions, as well as communicate with healthcare providers.
The infographic above serves as a reminder of the most common symptoms that an individual may experience if infected with the new variant of the coronavirus.
