The "Rainbow Bridge" crossing, which is a border point between the United States and Canada, witnessed the explosion of a vehicle that was trying to enter America.

The FBI is conducting an investigation into the explosion; after border crossing points between Canada and western New York were closed due to the incident.

The explosion resulted in the death of two people, and the injury of a 27-year-old who was transported to Niagara Falls Hospital with minor injuries.

News reports stated that two people were killed following a car explosion on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls today, Wednesday.

The explosion was first reported shortly after one o'clock in the afternoon on the American side of the crossing.

Local media sources said that Canadian officials are working on the assumption that the incident is terrorism-related, but New York Governor Kathy Hochul told reporters that there is no indication of terrorist activity.

However, national security sources also told local Canadian media that government officials have not ruled out the explosion being the result of other causes such as a medical event or a reckless driver.

Officials initially closed the Rainbow Bridge and three other border crossings in Niagara.

However, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed shortly after 5 p.m. that the Whirlpool Bridge, Peace Bridge, and Queenston-Lewiston Bridge were reopened to traffic.

One witness said he saw a car heading towards the border at high speed just before the explosion.

Mike Gunther said: "It was flying, over 100 mph (160 km/h)." “It hit the fence and flew into the air, and we just saw a fireball. It was covered in smoke everywhere. It was heading towards Canada.”

According to multiple reports, two people believed to have been in the car were declared dead.

A hospital official confirmed that one of the injured in the explosion is receiving treatment at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in New York for non-life-threatening injuries.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued a statement attempting to reassure residents that “there is no specific threat to public safety” in the province currently.

The statement shared on platform X said: “We will continue working with our partners in police and public safety to effectively monitor the situation.”

It added, “We recognize that such incidents can have an emotional impact.

Clarifying, the provincial police OPP is committed to keeping our communities safe and secure.”

On the other hand, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday afternoon that the Canadian National Security and Intelligence Advisor and the Minister of Public Safety briefed him on the situation, and that additional measures are being “considered and activated” at all border crossings across the country.

Adding, “We are in contact with U.S. officials.”

The Prime Minister’s statement said that the Minister of Public Safety, RCMP, and CBSA are fully engaged and providing all necessary support to maintain security.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also confirmed that he has been briefed on the matter and that regional law enforcement authorities are assessing the situation.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul said she has directed the New York State Police, along with the FBI joint terrorism task force, to monitor all entry points into the state.
