After 18 years of marriage, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced on Wednesday that they have decided to separate.

Trudeau and Grégoire Trudeau wrote in identical messages posted on their Instagram accounts, "Sophie and I would like to share the truth that after many thoughtful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate."

Trudeau and Grégoire began dating in 2003, as the Prime Minister states in his autobiography "Common Ground," Grégoire Trudeau was a former schoolmate of Trudeau's late brother, Michel.

They became engaged in 2004 and married a year later at the Sainte-Madeleine d'Outremont Church in Montreal.

Grégoire Trudeau, a former television host, has been a prominent presence alongside Trudeau since the beginning of his political career.

In 2007, Trudeau decided to seek the Liberal Party nomination in the Montreal riding of Papineau. He won his seat in the federal elections of 2008 and 2011.

The two were together at the charity boxing match in 2012 between Trudeau and then-Senator Patrick Brazeau.

Trudeau began contemplating the pursuit of the Liberal leadership after his victory as an MP. He wrote in his autobiography that the decision would ultimately come down to "a very personal private discussion between Sophie and me."

Trudeau won the federal Liberal leadership in 2013. The two celebrated in Ottawa with their children Xavier and Ella-Grace.

Grégoire Trudeau became a public figure in her own right throughout Trudeau's time in politics. She is an advocate for many charitable and social causes, including mental health and gender equality.

In 2015, Trudeau was elected Prime Minister for the first time. The two celebrated his electoral victory at the Liberal election headquarters in Montreal.

Shortly after his electoral win, Trudeau and Grégoire made headlines by appearing in Vogue magazine, with Trudeau stating in the piece, "We are partners more than my mom and dad ever were."

In March 2016, Trudeau and Grégoire traveled to Washington for a three-day visit. The two attended a formal dinner with then-President of the United States, Barack Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Three months later, Obama made a one-day trip to Ottawa. The former president delivered a speech to members of the Senate and House of Commons after being welcomed by Trudeau and Grégoire.

The following summer, the two welcomed Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to Ottawa to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Members of the royal family attended the Canada Day event in 2017 at Parliament with Trudeau, Grégoire, and their children, Hadrian, Ella-Grace, and Xavier.

In September 2019, Trudeau requested to dissolve Parliament and launched the federal election campaign, which took place in October, resulting in Trudeau winning and forming a minority government.

Trudeau and Grégoire watched the results with their children and then celebrated the victory at the Liberal election headquarters in Montreal.

A few months after Trudeau’s election win, the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Grégoire spoke deeply about mental health and well-being throughout the pandemic. In May 2020, she launched a podcast discussing the mental health challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trudeau and Grégoire had an unusual agenda on Canada Day 2020. Instead of the regular programming in Parliament, the two harvested vegetables at an Ottawa farm for a food bank.

As Canadians were still suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic, they headed to the polls in September 2021 to vote in another federal election, where Trudeau secured a third term and a second minority government.

Grégoire joined him along with their children at the Liberal headquarters in Montreal to celebrate his victory.

A year later, Trudeau and Grégoire traveled to London to attend the official funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

They were joined by former Prime Ministers Stephen Harper, Paul Martin, Jean Chrétien, and Kim Campbell, as well as former Governors General Michaëlle Jean and David Johnston.

In March 2023, Trudeau and Grégoire hosted U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden in Ottawa, where Biden delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament and attended a dinner hosted by the two, with Trudeau and Grégoire welcoming Biden at Rideau Cottage.
