The head of the Earthquake Department at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Christian Chitchai, reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale occurred yesterday Monday in the country, marking the strongest earthquake in 80 years.
Chitchai said: "An earthquake with a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale occurred in eastern Slovakia on Monday evening. It's a very strong earthquake for the region. The last time such a strong earthquake was recorded here was 80 years ago."
The epicenter of the tremors was near the city of Prešov at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake caused damage to a Catholic church in the village of Bakovce, where cracks appeared in the building. There is no information about any other damages.
The earthquake that occurred in eastern Slovakia was felt by people in both northeastern Hungary and southeastern Poland, as well as western Ukraine.
