After cornfields, forests, shrubs, and private properties, some traffickers have recently turned the railway lines crossing the Canadian-American border into smuggling corridors into the United States. More people are illegally entering the United States from Canada, raising concerns among the police. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating.
Traffickers covertly transport passengers alongside the railway, then drop them off from the vehicle and walk along the tracks, and when they reach the American side, someone drives to pick them up. These activities usually take place at night. Police have also discovered that some traffickers simply drove their vehicles on the railway tracks and covertly brought passengers directly to the border. There have been incidents where their vehicles got stuck on the tracks and were unable to move.
A spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said this poses a danger to smuggled travelers, drivers, train operators, and police patrol officers, as the train can suddenly stop due to abnormal conditions on the track, potentially causing a derailment. Several incidents have occurred where the railway lines were temporarily closed for several hours.
Over the past year, the number of traffickers heading south from Canada to the United States has significantly increased. According to U.S. statistics, from the beginning of June until the end of August of this year, U.S. patrol officers detained 2,147 smuggled travelers in New York and Vermont alone at the border with Quebec, while only 414 were arrested during the same period last year.
