The family of Alexander Luke in Montreal confirmed that he was among the victims this weekend during an attack carried out by Hamas on a music festival in a rural area near the border between Gaza and Israel.

Alan Luke, his father, wrote on Facebook: "With deep sadness, we announce the death of our son Alexander Luke." "We left today in Israel after a terrorist attack."

Luke wrote: "Like a true warrior, he left like a hero, wanting to protect the people he was with." "Alex was a force of nature, with a unique charisma and unparalleled generosity. The world will never be the same without you. Goodbye, my son, I love you and you watch over us from above. We will never forget you..."

The Chabad Center affiliated with the Westmount Educational Center also confirmed the news, writing on its Facebook page: "With shock and disbelief and a deep sense of sorrow, we have come to understand the full scope of the devastating attacks on Israel."

It continues: "Our dear friends and members of our community, Alan and Raquel Luke, lost their son Alex. Alex was visiting Israel and died in one of the terrorist attacks while heroically and selflessly saving others while repelling the attackers."

In his obituary, Luke is remembered as "a wonderful person who impacted the lives of everyone who knew him."

The "beloved character" was commemorated in the Côte Saint-Luc community in Montreal, where Luke's obituary states: "Many of us have known him since he was a little boy... his smile could light up the room, and his kind nature made him special. He was a friend to everyone he met."

The community describes his death as a tragic loss that left much sorrow.

The obituary notes that "the pain of his loss will be felt acutely by his family, as they knew him best and loved him unconditionally."

He is remembered as "the beloved son, brother, and friend of his loved ones."

Quebec Premier François Legault expressed his condolences to the Luke family in a social media post on Monday.

Legault wrote: "My heart is with the family and loved ones of Quebec citizen Alexander Luke, who lost his life in one of Hamas's terrorist attacks in Israel," "I am saddened by the tragic circumstances surrounding his death at the age of 33."

An emergency fund has been established to assist the Luke family in their time of need.
