Israeli Supreme Court Justices: Netanyahu's Protection Law was enacted for his benefit

Israeli Supreme Court President Esther Hayut said it is "clear" that the law passed in March, which prevents the court from ordering the Prime Minister to resign from his position, was designed in favor of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hayut asked, speaking during a hearing on petitions to the Supreme Court against the law, Judges Ofer Grossman and Isaac Amit clearly on several occasions whether delaying the implementation of the legislation would solve this problem, a form of legal interpretation published by the court just three days ago regarding the so-called Tiberias Law.

Likud MK Moshe Saada said two days before the law was passed in its second and third readings, "We legislated it because of Netanyahu, you can't be clearer than that," and Hayut insisted on that during the hearing.

Grossman wondered, "Perhaps there is an alternative to canceling the law, perhaps an amendment could be applied for resignation only from the next Knesset."

The resignation law was passed as an amendment to the Basic Law on government, ostensibly to prevent the court or the Attorney General from determining that Netanyahu violated the conflict of interest agreement signed in 2020 in light of his criminal indictments due to his involvement in legislative judicial reform for his coalition.

Grossman also insists during the hearing that the Supreme Court has the power of judicial review over basic laws, even though they have a quasi-constitutional nature, and these comments come against the backdrop of recent statements made by several government ministers that the court has no right to review or nullify such laws.
