Less than 24 hours after entering the picket lines, Unifor says it has reached a deal with General Motors in a similar agreement to the one it reached with Ford Motor Co last month.
Union President Lana Payne says the terms include all the items that the company opposed, including pensions, support for retiree income, and transitioning temporary workers to permanent positions.
The new agreement the company seeks to reach covers nearly 4,300 workers at GM's assembly plant in Oshawa, the propulsion plant in St. Catharines, and the parts distribution center in Woodstock.
Unifor says the strikes, which began at midnight, have been suspended to allow members to vote on the proposed agreement.
GM Canada's President Marissa West stated in her statement that the agreement recognizes the many contributions of team members with significant increases in wages, benefits, and job security.
The company says it expects to resume work at its three facilities this afternoon.
