Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid praised Benny Gantz's decision to resign from the war government, describing it as "important and correct."

Lapid said in a post on the "X" platform: "Gantz's decision to leave the failed government is important and correct."

He added, "It's time to replace this extremist government with a rational government that restores security and the captives and regains Israel's international standing."

Gantz had announced shortly before his resignation from the emergency government. He said in a televised press conference, "I announce today my departure from the emergency government; our exit from the government amid the failure to recover the detainees in Gaza is complex."

He accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of obstructing important strategic decisions for political considerations, stating, "Israel needs to achieve real victory, which prioritizes the return of the captives over remaining in power."

Netanyahu called for elections to be held as soon as possible and for the formation of an investigative committee regarding the events of October 7.

He also urged party leaders to "stand by him to conduct elections to form a national Zionist unity government," according to his statement.
