"My teams are working hard, extremely hard. There was no break with the closing of the Roxham Road," said the coordinator of the "Regional Program for the Reception and Integration of Asylum Seekers" (PRAIDA) in Montreal, Marie-Eve Polange.

This is the case for all organizations that provide assistance to asylum seekers.

In the view of these organizations, the closing of Roxham Road made no difference. "We are dealing with large numbers of people who are still arriving in the province of Quebec," Polange said.

Roxham Road is located in the southern part of Quebec at the border with the U.S. state of New York, and it was closed by Canada after negotiations with the U.S. administration, which agreed to update the Safe Third Country Agreement.

After more than four months of Roxham Road’s closure and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden's decision to review the Safe Third Country Agreement, following strong pressure in this direction from the Quebec government, the total number of asylum seekers arriving in Canada is nearly the same.

In June, the number of asylum seekers approached 11,000 across Canada. This figure exceeds the levels recorded at the beginning of this year, before the changes brought at the Canada-U.S. border.

"As we mentioned when Roxham Road was closed, this decision does not resolve the refugee crisis on an international level in any way," said Stéphane Reichehold, the general director of the "Table de concertation des organismes qui desservent les personnes réfugiées et immigrantes" (TCRI) in Montreal.

He added: "By closing one place, another opens. The closing of Roxham was a message intended to convey to people that everything is under control, while we know very well that it is impossible to control the movement of refugees."

If the current pace of asylum seekers continues, Canada may break records in the number of asylum seekers it received last year.

It is worth mentioning that the crossing of asylum seekers into Canada through Roxham Road intensified in recent years, with a record number exceeding 39,000 people using it in 2022.
